Sciatica: What You Should Know

6 min read

'Sciatica' describes pain that travels from the low back or buttock down the leg, often related to irritation of a nerve root. It can be intense — and for many people it improves over time with the right approach.

When to get checked in person

Seek medical care promptly for progressive leg weakness, numbness in the groin or saddle area, changes in bladder or bowel control, fever, or symptoms after significant trauma.

Staying active helps

For most people, staying as active as comfortably possible is better than bed rest. Gentle movement, nerve-friendly positions, and gradually increasing activity are commonly part of the plan.

Building back up

As symptoms settle, progressive strengthening helps rebuild tolerance for the things you want to do — walking, lifting, training, and playing with your kids.
