Many lifters stop deadlifting after a back pain episode and never return. That's understandable — but for many people, lifting can be part of the solution rather than the problem.
Start where you're confident
Choose a variation and load that feels manageable today: a kettlebell deadlift, an elevated trap-bar pull, or a hip hinge with a dowel.
Progress one variable at a time
Increase range, load, or volume gradually — not all at once. Track how your back responds over the next 24 hours, and adjust.
Expect some ups and downs
Flare-ups can happen and don't mean you've failed or caused damage. Scale back temporarily, then continue progressing.
